In another line of research, I examine how people navigate trade-offs between what is good for themselves and what is good for their groups. Using a combination of behavioural, eye-tracking, and fMRI methodologies, I look at how typically seen patterns of intergroup bias, in which people aim to help their own groups and hurt other groups, are influenced by the degree of self-sacrifice required to make a prosocial decision. In a third line of research, I examine how some of the basic processes involved in learning and category formation may contribute to the stereotypes and prejudice that we see in the world.
One way we have looked at this is in the context of avoidance: in a series of behavioural studies and computational models, we find that avoidance of a social group based on initial negative experiences perpetuates inaccurate negative stereotypes in two ways. First, avoidance removes the opportunity to learn about a group, thus preventing any update of initial negative beliefs. Second, avoidance itself has self-reinforcing effects, such that initial avoidance of a group makes subsequent avoidance of that group even more likely.
I also examine this question in the context of learning order. In collaboration with Michael Mack, I am using computational models of category formation to look at how the order in which someone learns about groups and contexts influences the types of conclusions and stereotypes they are likely to form.
